1577 the hermitage of santa luzia was founded by fishermen.

closely related to the sea and fishery in 1842 the fist fishing facility (armacao) originated. after the decline of the tuna fishery santa luzia grew to the present "capital of octopus". in 1984 it was elevated a own council and in 1999 to the status of a small city.
diverse fine restaurants offer dishes with fresh seafood like rice with octopus (arroz con polvo), octopus salad (salada de polvo).
