the history of cabanas of tavira is directly related to the tuna fishery. in 1734 the first fishing facility was founded.

in 1997 cabanas was established as a own council and in 2001 to the status of a small city.
the inhabitants still are dedicated closely to the sea and contribute much to a rich gastronomic culture. specialties are fresh fishes from the region, squids, lobsters and mussels.

the rich flora and fauna of this nature reserve is most impressive to travelers fond of nature life.
